When you come to my house I mother you

And love you in ways that mothers know how

With soft sounds at the entry

And a warm blanket by the fire

We sip tea

And sit together

Reflecting and returning the smile of

Mutual belonging

I make a space for you to be renewed

And when I move out into the world from my sacred space

And feel the wounds that come from a world that injures love

You come

and mother me with intensity

That mothers feel

When things go wrong

In the wilderness when I go out to war

You bring the motherhood of grit

A cool head in crisis

And the expert hands that bandage hurts with healing

We are women, we bear

Our burdens sink into a network of love

Where we spin soft songs of communion

Stoke our hearth

And death sits at our elbow

But we stand between

We mother each other.

And the deep wounds we give and we receive

Are relieved by our others

-strong women-

Even while we give them

Living in a gentle community

of imperfection

Our children, our mothers,

our grandmothers, and our others

Know that we are failing

And yet loving.

Knowing our imperfect love is still growing

But we hold the space and tenderly

Life opens.
